The Irun shirt is cut from the most gorgeous silky satin. Perfectly paired with the Irun skirt.
Irun means ‘hair’ in Yoruba. The Afro comb on the Irun print, designed in collaboration with Adebusola of Grapes Pattern Bank, is significant. It evokes memories, positive and negative, of getting our hair done.
For some, it is reminiscent of quality time spent getting our hair done by the most important women in our lives- aunties, mothers, grandmothers. For others, it is reminiscent of pain and a constant struggle with hairdressers and caregivers not understanding our natural hair well enough. Many of us were encouraged to chemically relax our hair in a way that damaged our perceptions of beauty and self-esteem.
Whatever end of the spectrum you fall under, whether your natural hair represents to you pride or pain, whether you have kept your hair natural all your life, reverted to your natural hair, or still have relaxed hair like I do, we are all still navigating the highly politicized yet always celebrated concept of hair as a Black Woman.
